Super-Long Paper Chain Challenge

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Cubs work in small teams to design and build the longest possible paper chain using limited materials. They must plan, cooperate, problem-solve, and test ideas just like real engineers! At the end, each team’s chain is measured to see who created the longest unbroken chain.

Resources

• 2 pieces of A4 paper per team
• 30 cm of masking tape per team
• 1 pair of scissors per team
• 1 ruler per team
• Access to timer/ stopwatch

Instructions

Individual Planning (5 minutes)
Each Cub thinks about how they might turn the materials into the longest chain possible. They can sketch ideas or think through strategies.

Team Planning (5 minutes)
Cubs share ideas and decide together on a final team design. Encourage listening, compromise, and teamwork. Cubs must decide how wide to cut strips, how to tape them, and how to make the most of their resources.

Construction Time (20 minutes)
Teams build their paper chains using only the allowed materials. Leaders to supervise safe scissor use.

Measurement & Judging (5 minutes)
When time is up, each team brings their chain for measuring. If a chain breaks, the team chooses which intact section will be measured. Longest chain wins!

OPTIONAL:
Reflection (5 minutes)
Ask teams what worked well, what they would change, and how they cooperated.

Clean Up Time (5 minutes)
Get the young people to clean up their stations. Make sure scissors are safely put away.
