Description
To create a Reading Tree.
To encourage reading engagement by visually tracking reading progress using a beaver-and-tree theme that reinforces effort and achievement.
Promotes regular reading habits
Encourages ownership of reading choices
Supports discussion about books and reading preferences
Resources
Materials Required
Large tree trunk and branches (paper, card, or wall display)
Leaf cut-outs (paper or card)
Beaver cut-outs (optional: one per child or group)
Pens or markers
Blu-tack, pins, or glue
Display title: “Our Reading Tree”
Instructions
Introduce the Theme
Explain that beavers build using trees, just as readers build knowledge using books. The class will “grow” a reading tree together.
Set Up the Tree Display
Place the tree trunk and branches on the wall or board. This represents the class’s shared reading journey.
Reading and Recording
Each time a child finishes a book (or agreed reading milestone), they write:
Book title
Author (optional)
A word or short sentence about the book
This is written on a leaf.
Add to the Tree
The leaf is added to the branches of the tree. Over time, the tree becomes fuller as more reading is completed.
Beaver Element (Optional)
Each child has a beaver character placed at the base of the tree. As they read more, their beaver can “move up” the tree or collect logs/leaves.
Differentiation and Variations
Younger children: Draw a smiley face or colour a leaf instead of writing.
Older children: Add a short review or a favourite quote.
Group reading: One leaf per shared book.
Challenges: Seasonal goals (e.g. “Can we fill the tree by half-term?”).
