How Many Squirrels Long?

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Squirrels discover a fun way to measure by using their own bodies. Working together, they measure how long the main room is by lying down head to feet, counting how many Squirrels it takes to reach the other side. This introduces non-standard units of measurement, teamwork, and spatial awareness in a playful, memorable way.

Resources

Chalk (or masking tape if indoors)

Clear floor space across the room

Paper and pen for recording the number

Instructions

Setup
Clear a straight path across the main room.
Explain that today they will measure using Squirrels, not rulers.
Demonstrate head-to-feet positioning with one volunteer.

Activity
One child lies down on the floor.
A second child lies next to them, head to feet.
Continue adding children until you reach the other side of the room.
Count together how many Squirrels long the room is.
Mark the start and end point with chalk.

Measuring & Recording
Say the total number clearly and encourage the group to repeat it.
Write the number down where everyone can see.

Ask simple questions:
“Would it take more big Squirrels or small Squirrels?”
“Is this room longer or shorter than you thought?”
