Around and Around the Circle

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Squirrels explore how to measure around a shape by working together to measure a big circle. They are encouraged to suggest their own ideas, such as using a rope or holding hands, before testing them out. This activity introduces the idea of measuring length around something (circumference) through movement, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Resources

Long rope or washing line
Measuring tape
Chalk (or masking tape)
Clear floor space
Paper and pen for recording
Tables or other objects to measure

Instructions

Setup
Clear a large open area.
Place the rope nearby but don’t explain its use straight away.
Draw a large circle on the floor with chalk (or mark one with tape). Alternatively use tables (or other objects) and split into teams

Activity
Ask the Squirrels:
“How could we measure around this circle?” Or other object
Listen to their ideas and choose one or two to try (depending on time).

Option 1 – Hand Span Method
-Everyone holds hands around the circle.
-Carefully step out and line up in one long line.

Option 2 – Rope Method
-Lay the rope all the way around the circle.
-Straighten it out into a line.

Option 3 - Lying down method.
-Have a team lie down side by side to form a line.

Option 4 - Walking method.
-Each squirrel to take steps around the circle (or object) to measure

Measuring & Recording
Measure the line using a measuring tape or steps.
Say the measurement out loud together.
Write the number down.

Ask reflection questions:
“Was it longer than you thought?”
“Which way was easier?”
“What happens if the circle is bigger?”
