How Far Can a Squirrel Jump?

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Squirrels take turns to jump forward from a line and discover how far they can go. Each jump is marked and then measured using a tape measure. This activity introduces measuring distance, encourages turn-taking, and lets children explore movement in a safe, structured way.

Resources

Chalk (or masking tape if indoors)
Measuring tape
Clear, flat floor space
Paper and pen for recording distances

Instructions

Setup
Clear a straight jumping lane on the floor.
Draw or mark a clear starting line using chalk or tape.
Explain and demonstrate a safe two-footed jump.

Activity
One child stands with their toes on the line.
They take one step and jump forward.
Mark where their feet land with chalk.
Children take turns, with one jumper at a time.
Other Squirrels watch from behind the line.

Measuring
Measure from the start line to the chalk mark using a tape measure.
Say the distance out loud and encourage the group to repeat it.
Write the measurement down if you wish.
Reinforce that everyone’s jump is different and that trying is what matters.
