Introduction to Beavers on Camp crafts and map reading skills, and introduction to the Cub badge pioneer but in a simple, yet educational fun way.
4 stages alogether.
1 to learn basic knots, 1 map reading and 1 code breaking, bringing all 3 stages together to solve the final task.

Resources

Short lengths of rope or thick string - 1 per Beaver,
Large printed floor map
Cones/markers/pictures for map points
Code sheets
Pencils/crayons
Stickers or stamps on completition
Timer or whilste

Instructions

1. Simple game - Welcome and Warm up:
Simon says pretend to pitch a tent.......says tie a knot....Read a map etc
2. Knots Station: 15 minutes
> Overhand knot = stopper knot
> Square knot = Reef Knot
Say a rhyme to help teach; Right over left and under, left over right and under!
Show first on big rope.
Challenge: Tie a knot to secure 'camping gear'

3. Map Reading Station: 15 minutes
Activty: Find the lost camp gear=
> Simple map with Tent, Tree, Fire, Lake with symbols/pictures
> use cones placed around the hall/create a giant grid map with cones/pictures
Task:
Follow the map to find 3 locations.
Skills learnt: left/right
Following directions
Map Symbols

4. Code Breaking Station: 15 minutes:
Picture code option Bear B, Fire F, Tree T etc
Simple Caesar Shift Option: A=B, B=C etc
Task - crack a short message like :meet at tent
