Our Body, Our Behaviour

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

To help cubs understand good behaviour, unacceptable behaviour, and behaviours they are unsure about, and to create a shared code of conduct together. The cubs work in small groups to explore good, bad, and unsure behaviours by drawing around a person and linking behaviours to body parts using a traffic-light colour system. The activity finishes with the whole pack agreeing on a shared code of conduct.

Resources

Large sheets of paper (flipchart paper or wallpaper rolls)
Green, red, and amber/orange pens or crayons
Blu Tack or tape
Permanent marker for final Code of Conduct
Clear floor space

Instructions

Part 1: Introduction, explain the activity of creating the code of conduct
Explain the colour system:
Green: good behaviour (always OK)
Red: bad behaviour (not OK)
Amber: unsure behaviour (depends on the situation)

Part 2: Small group activity (Around 20 mins)
Split the cubs into groups of 4 or 5
One cub lies down while the others carefully draw around them
Groups discuss and write on different parts using the colour system
Examples:
Green: Speak with respect, help others, walk safely indoors, listen to leaders and each other, be kind and include everyone
Amber: Joking that might hurt feelings, play fighting, running inside the room, talking whilst someone else is speaking, not sure how someone feels
Red: Name calling or swearing, do not hit, slap or grab, no kicking or tripping, ignoring instructions, bullying or leaving people out

Part 3: Share and discuss (Around 10-15 mins)
Bring everyone together.
Each group shares some of their good, unsure and bad behaviour. Get them to pick their top 3/5 depending on how many they have come up with.
Leaders guide discussion around safety, kindness, and respect.

4. Create a collective code of conduct (Around 10-15mins)
As a whole group; turn green behaviours into agreed rules, identify behaviours that are not acceptable, discuss amber behaviours and agree when they are OK or not OK

Write the final collective code of conduct

Could easily adapt for scouts- just make it more challenging, by doing it around the scout law or something specific
