Instructions
INTRODUCTION (5 minutes)
Leader says:
“Today we’re learning about how money is used online. Even though you can’t always see money online, it is still real money.”
Ask hands-up questions about games, apps, and online shopping.
WAYS MONEY IS USED ONLINE (8 minutes)
Explain:
• Online shopping ? – buying items from websites
• Games and apps ? – skins, coins, extra lives
• Subscriptions ? – monthly payments
• Contactless payments ? – phones and watches
• Online banking ? – used by adults
CRYPTOCURRENCY (7 minutes)
Leader says:
“Cryptocurrency is digital money that only exists online. It is not controlled by banks and is very risky.”
Explain scams ?, fast-changing prices ?, and that it is not for children.
WEBSITE SAFETY (5 minutes)
Show examples of:
• Padlock ?
• https://
• Correct spelling
Explain where these appear on phones and computers.
REAL OR RISKY GAME (8 minutes)
Split Scouts into small groups.
Read scenario cards and ask groups to decide: Safe ✅, Risky ⚠️ or Unsure ❓.
Discuss answers.
WRAP-UP & SAFETY CODE (5 minutes)
Create the Scout Online Money Code:
Ask before spending ?
Protect passwords ?
Tell an adult ?️
Confirm Requirement 1 is complete.

Activity: Money Skills Badge – How Money Is Used Online
Potential Risks and Controls:
1. Discussion of scams causes worry
• Control: Use calm, age-appropriate language and reassure Scouts that adults can help.
2. Scouts sharing personal or family financial information
• Control: Clearly state that no passwords, card details, or private information should be shared.
3. Cryptocurrency misunderstood as encouragement
• Control: Repeatedly state that cryptocurrency is high risk and not for children.
4. False belief that padlock means completely safe
• Control: Explain padlocks help but do not guarantee safety.
Safeguarding Notes:
• Follow UK Scouts safeguarding policy
• Encourage Scouts to speak to a trusted adult
• No real spending or internet access is required during this session
