Description
Beavers will be introduced to pickleball through fun, age‑appropriate games and activities. The session focuses on movement, hand‑eye coordination, teamwork, and trying a new sport using lightweight equipment in a safe and supportive environment.
Resources
Lightweight paddles
Pickleballs or foam balls
Cones
Low net or rope
Whistle
Instructions
Before the session:
Set up small activity stations using cones to create safe play areas.
Use lightweight paddles and pickleballs or foam balls only.
Ensure clear space between groups to prevent accidental contact.
Brief leaders/helpers on station rotations and safety points.
Key Rules to Explain to Beavers:
Hold paddles carefully and no swinging near faces.
Wait for your turn and listen for instructions.
Underarm hits only – no overarm swings.
Stop immediately if a leader blows the whistle or calls “freeze”.
Session Structure (Scoring is not required – focus on participation and fun):
Warm‑up – running, throwing and catching simple balls.
Skill Practice – tapping or gently hitting the ball towards targets.
Net Play – rolling or hitting the ball over a low net or rope.
Mini Games – short, non‑competitive games (1v1 or 2v2).
Cool Down & Reflection – group discussion on what was enjoyed.
Safety & Supervision
Non‑contact activity throughout.
One adult leader per station where possible.
Leaders to actively supervise swing space and group behavior.
Any child feeling tired or unsure can rest without penalty.
Inclusion & Adaptability
Activities can be adjusted for ability levels.
Children may throw or roll the ball if hitting is difficult.
Encourage teamwork and positive encouragement.
