Squirrel Hunt- Make a Trail
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Inspired by: https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/were-going-on-a-squirrel-search/.
In nests (groups of 3-4), squirrels hide a squirrel treasure, and then use nature materials (sticks, stones) to lay a trail of arrows for other nests to follow.
This was done as a round robin station.
Resources
-open area with sticks, stones, or other material to scavenge to make arrows
-squirrel stuffy, acorns or other treasure,
Instructions
1. Introduce squirrels to outdoor area- emphasizing safety features and boundaries.
2. Explain to squirrels that we are going to be laying a trail, but we need to gather materials. Give them a few minutes to go and collect sticks, stones and explore the area.
2. Now that they've explored, talk about places where a squirrel would like to hide. Have squirrels find a squirrel hiding spot in your play area to hide their squirrel treasure.
3. Pick a start point for the trail to start. Take turns making arrows on the ground to point a trail for the next group to follow that lead the way to the treasure (having each squirrel do 2 arrows is good!). When laying the trail, have one squirrel point in the direction of the arrow and the next squirrel walks in that direction to place the next arrow. The last arrow should point to the train treasure!
4. Once all the arrows have been laid- have the group follow their trail.
5. Let the next group follow the trail.
6. At end of the activity when all groups have had a turn, explain how it's important to leave no trace in nature. Clean up the playing area and return your trail making materials to the wild.
