Chocolate Smell & Guess Challenge
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
In this fun sensory session, Beavers explore different chocolate‑related smells by rotating around mystery scent stations. Using only their noses, they try to identify ingredients like cocoa, vanilla, mint, and orange. After everyone has made their guesses, the group comes back together to reveal the answers and chat about which scent they think would make the best chocolate bar. The activity encourages curiosity, teamwork, and sensory exploration.
Resources
- 4–6 opaque cups or containers (so Beavers can’t see inside)
- Cotton pads or cotton balls
- Chocolate‑themed scents, such as:
* Cocoa powder
* Vanilla
* Mint
* Orange peel or orange extract
* Cinnamon
- Number stickers (to label each cup)
- A table for the scent stations
- Something to seal the cups (foil, cling film, or lids) with small holes for smelling
Instructions
1. Explain the Activity
Gather the Beavers in a circle and tell them they will be testing their noses to identify different chocolate‑related smells. Remind them this is a smelling activity only — no tasting.
2. Split the Colony
Divide the Beavers into 2 or 3 small groups, depending on numbers.
3. Rotate Around the Stations
4. Each group starts at a different scent cup.
Beavers smell through the small holes without touching the contents.
They quietly guess the scent — no shouting answers so other groups can try.
5. Move to the Next Cup
When you call “rotate,” the groups move to the next numbered cup until they’ve visited all stations.
6. Gather Back Together
Bring everyone back to the circle once all groups have finished.
7. Reveal the Answers
Go through each numbered cup and announce the correct scent.
Ask the Beavers to raise hands if they guessed correctly.
8, Discussion Question
Finish with a fun group chat:
“Which smell would make the best chocolate bar, and why?”
