Description

Children build a simple bug hotel using a small drain pipe/bottle filled with bamboo canes. This creates a safe space for insects that help gardens. Once finished, the hotel can be hung or placed in a sheltered, shady spot and left undisturbed.

Resources

- Small piece of old drain pipe/bottle
- Hollow bamboo canes (cut to size) and Twigs
- String or twine (for hanging)
- Scissors or secateurs (adults only)

Instructions

- Give each child a piece of drain pipe/bottle
- Fill the pipe with cut bamboo canes & twigs.
- Pack the canes&twigs tightly so they don’t fall out.
- Tie string around the pipe if the bug hotel will be hung.
- Place or take home the bug hotel — best in a sheltered, slightly shady, low spot or tied to a fence/tree.
