Description
It is often said that the quickest way to a Cub’s heart is through their stomach! I truly believe that using food as a teaching tool is one of the best ways to engage a pack; it transforms abstract concepts like "chemical reactions" or "emergency procedures" into something tangible, tasty, and memorable.
By bringing these traditionally outdoor skills into the familiar setting of our church hall, you can introduce the core principles of fire construction and safety in a safe, highly controlled environment. This allows the Cubs to learn about the "Fire Triangle" and the difference between tinder, kindling, and fuel without the risks of an open flame.
Resources
Food (All Vegan & Nut-Free): Shredded Wheat, Straight Pretzels, Breadsticks (or Vegan Chocolate Fingers), Vegan Chocolate Buttons or Skittles.
Equipment: Paper plates, Antibacterial wipes, Bin bags, Dustpan and brush.
Instructions
1. Hygiene (10 mins): I lead the pack in a mandatory 20-second hand-scrubbing session. While they wash, helpers wipe the hall tables with anti-bac.
2. The Brief: I explain the Fire Triangle (Heat, Fuel, Oxygen).
3. The Safety Circle: I have the Cubs place "stones" (Chocolate buttons) in a wide circle on their plate.
- I instruct the Cubs to follow a strict order. They cannot move to the next "level" until I've checked their structure.
4. Tinder: I show them how to crumble Shredded Wheat in the centre. This represents the easily lit base.
5. Kindling: I guide them to lean Pretzels against each other in a tepee shape over the tinder.
6. Fuel: I have them add the "logs" (Breadsticks/Chocolate fingers) last. I challenge the Cubs to explain back to me why we built it in that order before they are allowed to eat. I explain that we leave gaps for air (Oxygen).
7. Clean Up: Once eaten, I lead a "crumb patrol" to ensure the hall floor is spotless.
