Description

A way to build previous learning on grid references and map symbols.

Take the first card. Find the grid reference. What is there. Find the matching OS symbol card. What is the new grid reference. And repeat.

Resources

Handouts
OS maps 145 and 146. One set per patrol
Roamers, rulers or other equipment useful for identifying 6 figure grid references.
Cards (see resources). One set per patrol
Two tables per patrol set at either ends of the room.

Instructions

All patrols start at one side of the room behind a table with their set of maps.
At the other side of the room a set of cards per patrol is showing on the table. They are randomly placed, with the OS symbol description showing. Except the starter card (which is blank on the reverse). This starter grid reference card is one the patrol starts with.

One member of the team runs up, collects the starter card, runs back. The team then look up the grid reference and identifies the OS symbol at that grid reference.

A second member of the team runs up to the cards, collects the card with the OS symbol description that matches the one they have just found on the map. The Scout returns with the card, on the back is a grid reference. They repeat the exercise.

Each member of the patrol has to run up in turn. Once each members has a had a turn, they start through the patrol members again.

This has a high chance of them guessing the wrong symbol and not realising the mistake.

Option one - the patrol with the most cards before reaching the end card is the winner. With completion time counting in a tie break situation.

Option two - the patrol are given the opportunity to try and work out where they went wrong. They return the errant cards, and restart where they believe they made the mistake. Count the number of times this happens to use in a scoring situation.

Option three - the patrol randomly pick a new card restart with that. But that will mean that at some stage they will draw the card that they have already picked the answer card. So will stall. Again in this situation you can count the number of times this happens to use in a scoring situation.
