Palm Sunday wasn’t just any old day, it was an important day at the beginning of a very important week. Explore not just the events of Palm Sunday but Holy Week and what the story of Easter means for us today!

- Palm Sunday is a holy day that marks Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
- It is one of the only stories that features in all four of the gospels.
- It is celebrated one week before Easter and it begins Holy Week.
- It is called Palm Sunday because crowds welcomed Jesus by waving palm branches and laying them along the road.

Instructions

A leader will need to set up the TV and speakers, and download the video in advance if needed. Print out the Holy Week print outs.

Getting into the activity

1.) Gather your group and explain that Palm Sunday was important not just because Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, but because it was the beginning of a very important week called Holy Week.

2.)Get four children to come up and hold the four ‘Holy Week’ signs and show them to the rest of the group. As they do so, talk the group through Holy Week.

3.)Palm Sunday was followed by Maundy Thursday, where Jesus gathered with his friends to share an important meal called the last supper before being arrested. Good Friday, where Jesus was put on trial and crucified on the cross, and Easter Sunday, where the tomb was empty because Jesus had risen from the grave!

5.) The reason we celebrate Palm Sunday is because without Palm Sunday Jesus wouldn’t have been in Jerusalem. As Jesus said in the video, his death and resurrection was the only way that we could be forgiven and live with God forever in heaven.

6.) As sad as Jesus’ death was, it needed to happen. The crowds welcomed Jesus as their Saviour thinking he would defeat the Romans who were ruling over them. Instead, he defeated death itself. Palm Sunday truly was the beginning of a very important week.

7.) Finish in prayer, thanking God for the events of Palm Sunday and Holy Week. Thank him that Jesus died for us so that we are forgiven for all the wrong things we have done, and that because of him we can live forever in heaven with you. Ask for help to not just cheer and celebrate Jesus as our Saviour on Palm Sunday, but every day.
