Book corners
Chaning the ending of Very Hungry Caterpillar

Duplo, ribbon or string, paper and drawing equipment, toy bears, green paper cups and card, Very Hungry Caterpillar book

Instructions

Start with playing corners game but using books. Give each child 4 tokens (Duplo blocks or anything you have lots of). Choose 4 books and use a ribbon to loop it through the book and pin to wall. Squirrels move like a book character in the middle (swing trunk like Elmer, eat all food like Tiger, wriggle like caterpillar, slither like Snake, fly like Owl, scurry like Mouse etc). When leader shouts 'corners' everyone choose a corner (one leader not to watch). Whoever is in the corner that gets calls out, puts a block back. Those with most blocks left at the end are the winners.

Then read most of Very Hungry Caterpillar. Stop when he is eating through lots of different things. Squirrels then make up their own ending. Draw which foods their caterpillar will eat and underneath draw what their caterpillar will turn into. When all done, share ideas.

Finish with voting and sharing a story they have brought in.

Activities for while everyone is arriving; grow a beanstalk with green paper cups and strips of green card; build a new chair for Baby Bear from Duplo (have some bear toys)
