Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
This activity aims to help Ladybirds understand that bananas come from farmers far away and that Fairtrade is about being fair to people.
Resources
• One banana
• Fairtrade logo (printed or on a phone)
• Fairtrade colouring sheet (one per Ladybird)
• Pencils or crayons
Instructions
1. Warm-up game:
Play Duck, Duck, Goose, but change the words to: Banana, Banana, Go!
2. Banana chat:
Sit in a circle and show the banana. Ask a few questions (pick 4-5 from the list below).
• Who likes bananas?
• What colour is a banana when it is ready to eat?
• Do bananas grow in Ireland?
• Where do bananas grow?
• Does a banana grow on a tree or under the ground?
• Who helps grow bananas on a farm?
• How to bananas travel to your local shop?
3. Who helps the banana?
Ask the Ladybirds to act out the journey of a banana
• Be a banana tree
• Be the farmer picking bananas
• Be a boat travelling across the sea
• Be the shopkeeper putting bananas on the shelf
• Say: “Lots of people help the banana get to us”
4. Fair or Not Fair?
Tell Ladybirds to show for fair or not fair (alternatively stand/sit).
Read out the statements below:
• A farmer works hard and is looked after and treated fairly.
• A farmer works all day and is not looked after.
• People share and help each other.
• Someone takes everything and doesn’t share.
• Everyone gets a turn to speak.
• Someone is left out on purpose.
Try to keep it quick, not a long discussion.
5. Spot the Fairtrade sign
Show Ladybirds the Fairtrade logo and say: “This sign is called Fairtrade. It helps us spot products that support fairness for farmers.”
Ask: “What other items might we see this sign on?” (bananas, chocolate, tea, sugar, etc.)
6. Colour and Chat
Give each Ladybird a simple Fairtrade logo colouring sheet. While colouring, ask:
• What did you notice today?
• What surprised you?
• What was your favourite part?
