IGG Brownie GCE Activity: Fairtrade Banana Drama
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
This activity aims to help Brownies understand what ‘fair pay’ means and why Fairtrade matters.
Resources
• One banana per group (or paper versions)
• Ten counters/coins/buttons per group
• Fairtrade logo cut into simple jigsaw pieces (one set per group)
Instructions
1. Warm-up running game
• Make teams of 4 Brownies, with one being the Farmer, one being the Transporter, one being the Shopkeeper, and one being the Customer.
• Mark a space at the top of the meeting space they have to run up to.
• Call the different roles at random and the person with that role runs up and back. The first person back wins a point for their team.
o Another option is the ‘Banana Drama!’ call, where the teams run together in a line (hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them) and the first team back wins a point.
• Feel free to weave a story in around the game and set a number of points to decide when the game would be over, i.e. the first team to 7 points wins.
2. Decide what’s fair
• In groups of four, assign roles: Farmer, Transporter, Shopkeeper, Customer.
• Give the Customer 10 counters and the Shopkeeper a banana. Explain: “The customer is buying the banana for €1. Decide together how many counters the farmer, transporter and shopkeeper should get.”
• Here’s a few prompts:
o Who grows the banana?
o Who travels far?
o Who sells it?
3. What really happens
Now reveal the usual split (simple version)
• Farmer: 1 counter
• Transporter: 2 counters
• Shopkeeper: 7 counters
Ask: “Does this feel fair? Why? /Why not?”
4. Fairtrade version
Say: “Fairtrade helps make it fairer for farmers”
Rearrange the counters
• Farmer: 3 counters
• Transporter: 2 counters
• Shop: 5 counters
Ask: “Does this feel fairer? Why? / Why not?”
5. Fairtrade spotting
Ask groups: “What else might be Fairtrade?”
• This could be chocolate, tea, sugar, fruit, flowers, etc.
6. Find the Fairtrade logo
• Hide jigsaw pieces of the Fairtrade logo around the room (one set per group).
• When you say “Go Bananas!” one girl at a time runs to find a piece and brings it back.
• First group to complete the logo shouts “Go Bananas!”
7. Wrap-up
Circle up and ask: “What’s one thing you’re taking away from today?” (or “What’s one thing you noticed?”)
