Description
Here’s a fun, simple, high‑energy obstacle course perfect for 5‑year‑old Squirrels, using exactly the equipment you listed. It’s designed to be safe, quick to set up, and easy for little ones to follow with a story hook if you want to link it to Ranger Red.
Resources
Equipment: rope, cones, hoops, ball, tennis racket, pioneer poles (used as markers or balance beams, not for building)
Instructions
1️⃣ The Wiggly Rope Trail
Equipment: rope
How it works:
• Lay the rope on the ground in a curvy, snaky line.
• Squirrels must walk along it, heel‑to‑toe if they can, without stepping off.
• Encourage arms out like “tightrope walkers”.
Ranger Red story cue:
“This is the wiggly path through Sand Dune Woods. Don’t fall into the sandy puddles!”
---
2️⃣ Cone Zig‑Zag Dash
Equipment: cones
How it works:
• Set up 6–8 cones in a zig‑zag pattern.
• Squirrels weave in and out, running or fast‑walking.
Optional variation:
• Ask them to do it as different animals: crab walk, tiptoe mouse, giant stomping bear.
---
3️⃣ Hoop Jumping Islands
Equipment: hoops
How it works:
• Lay hoops on the floor like stepping stones.
• Squirrels jump from hoop to hoop, two feet together or one foot at a time.
SEND‑friendly option:
• Let them step instead of jump.
Ranger Red cue:
“These are the magic islands. Don’t touch the lava sand!”
---
4️⃣ Ball Balance Challenge
Equipment: ball + tennis racket
How it works:
• Squirrels balance a small ball on the racket and walk 5–10 steps.
• If it falls, they just pick it up and keep going.
Alternative:
• Roll the ball around a cone if balancing is too tricky.
---
5️⃣ Pioneer Pole Balance Walk
Equipment: pioneer poles
How it works:
• Lay 1–2 poles flat on the ground as a low balance beam.
• Squirrels walk across slowly, arms out.
Safety:
• Poles must be fully on the ground, not raised.
Ranger Red cue:
“This is the fallen log across the dunes. Walk carefully so you don’t wake the snoozing seagull!”
---
6️⃣ Final Challenge: Target Throw
Equipment: hoop or cone + ball
How it works:
• Place a hoop on the floor or a cone a short distance away.
• Squirrels gently throw the ball to land inside the hoop or knock over the cone.
Ranger Red cue:
“Help Ranger Red knock down the last obstacle so we can reach camp!”
