Fashion Sustainability Week (April 3rd week)

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Fashion Revolution Week occurs on the week around the 24th of April every year to raise awareness about the human rights abuses and environmental degradation caused by the fashion industry.
Help Squirrels & Beavers understand that clothes come from somewhere, can be reused or fixed, and that buying too much can create waste. Encourage simple actions that help their local community.

By the end, children should be able to:
- Talk about where clothes come from
- Understand we can reuse, repair, share, donate
- Think of ways to help others locally
- Choose one simple action as a group
- Tell others why it matters

Activities include:
1. Welcome Circle – “What Are You Wearing?” (5 mins)
2. Story Chat – “Too Many T-Shirts!” (5 mins)
3. Sorting Game – Keep, Fix, Share, Recycle (10 mins)
4. Community Thinking – Who Can It Help? (5 mins)
5. Planning Our Action (Badge Planning Section) (10 mins)
6. Telling the World (Badge Telling Section) (5 mins)

Resources

Instructions

1. Welcome Circle – “What Are You Wearing?” (5 mins)

Sit in a circle. Ask each child to name one item of clothing they’re wearing.

Simple Questions
- What clothes are you wearing today?
- Why do we wear clothes?
- Do clothes last forever?
- What happens when clothes are too small?
- Can someone else use them?

Leader note: Keep answers short and positive.

2. Story Chat – “Too Many T-Shirts!” (5 mins)

Tell a quick story:
Sam has 20 T-shirts. Some don’t fit. Some are never worn. Sam keeps buying more. The drawers are full!

Ask:
- Does Sam need more T-shirts?
- How might Sam feel with messy drawers?
- What could Sam do instead?
- Could Sam give some away?
- Could Sam swap with a friend or sibling?
Then ask:
-Is it better to buy lots, or use what we already have?

3. Sorting Game – Keep, Fix, Share, Recycle (10 mins)

Use old clothes / pictures of clothes.
Make 4 hoops or boxes labelled:
-Keep
-Fix
-Share
-Recycle
Children place items into the right group.

Questions While Playing
-This sock has a hole. What could we do?
-This jumper is too small. Who could wear it now?
-This coat still works. Should we throw it away?
-If something is broken, can we mend it?
-What happens if lots of clothes are thrown away?

4. Community Thinking – Who Can It Help? (5 mins)

Talk about local people.
Questions
-Could old coats help someone feel warm?
-Could baby clothes help another family?
-Could toys and clothes be shared with neighbours?
-How does giving help our community?
-How does fixing things help our town?
-What happens when bins are too full?

Simple message: Reusing helps people and helps the planet.

5. Planning Our Action (Badge Planning Section) (10 mins)

Choose one realistic group action for the next few months.

Good Options
- Coat & jumper donation collection
- Children’s clothes swap rail
- Bring a button to learn fixing/sewing with adults
- “Wear it again” challenge week
- Collect old textiles for recycling
- Donate pyjamas / baby clothes locally
Questions to Help Choose
- Which idea helps people most?
- Which idea can we do together?
- Which idea feels fun?
- Who could we help?
- What do we need?

6. Telling the World (Badge Telling Section) (5 mins)

Instead of posters, use one of these:
- Record a short video message
- Parent pickup “fashion facts” performance
- Clothes-themed parade with spoken promises
- Make thank-you tags for donations
- Invite parents to a mini swap event
- Create a group pledge tree using fabric scraps
