Notes:
Irish women first won the right to vote in parliamentary elections on February 6, 1918, under the Representation of the People Act, though this was limited to women over 30 with property qualifications. Full voting equality with men—lowering the age to 21—was achieved in 1922 with the Irish Free State Constitution.
Key Milestones:
• 1918 (Partial Vote): The Representation of the People Act 1918 gave women over 30 who met property requirements, or were university graduates, the right to vote. Men could vote at 21 without qualifications.
• 1918 (Right to Stand): The Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act, passed in November 1918, allowed women to be elected to Parliament at 21.
• 1919: Countess Markievicz became the first woman elected to Dáil Éireann.
• 1922 (Equality): Upon the establishment of the Irish Free State, the 1922 Constitution granted voting rights to all citizens, men and women, at age 21
Women in Northern Ireland, as part of the UK, did not achieve equal voting rights with men (at 21) until 1928
