Description

Beavers will safely prepare a simple salad by using age-appropriate knives to cut a selection of vegetables of their choice. The activity will help develop basic food preparation skills, healthy eating awareness, and safe knife-handling techniques under close adult supervision.


Resources

Age-appropriate child-safe knives
Chopping boards
Selection of washed vegetables (e.g. cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, carrots)
Bowls or containers for salad
Plates/serving bowls
Handwashing facilities or antibacterial wipes
Aprons (optional)
Paper towels/cloths for cleaning spills
Bin bags/bin access
First aid kit
Allergy and dietary information list
Adult helpers/leaders for supervision

Instructions

Wash your hands before touching any food.
Listen carefully to the leader’s safety instructions before using the knives.
Stay seated while cutting vegetables.
Always hold the knife carefully and point it down towards the chopping board.
Cut slowly and carefully — there is no need to rush.
Keep your fingers away from the blade when cutting.
Only cut the vegetables given to you.
If you need help, stop and ask an adult or leader.
Do not walk around holding a knife.
Place your chopped vegetables into the salad bowl when finished.
Help tidy your area and put equipment away safely.
Wash your hands after the activity and enjoy your salad!
