Making Campfires and Toasting Marshmallows

Description
Here, Beavers will learn how to make a campfire and roast marshmallows over it.
It consists of:
1. Finding Wood and Building Fires (20 minutes): Beavers will help collect wood for the campfire and get it ready to light.
2. Lighting fires (5 minutes): An adult lights the fires and Beavers watch.
3. Looking for insects (10 minutes): Looking for five different insects whilst waiting for fires to die down.
4. Campfire Cooking (15 minutes): Beavers will learn how to safely roast marshmallows on skewers over the campfire.

- Enough firepits for approx 4-6 Beavers per firepit

Instructions
Preparation
------------
This is designed to be run in an outdoor area which is suitable for campfires.
- Prepare firepits
- Collect some wood and kindling
- Have a buck of water for each firepit
- Allocate an adult to each fire
Finding Wood and Building Fires (20 minutes)
--------------------------------------
1. Briefing:
- Finding wood: Explain where they can find wood of different sizes (from kindling to large sticks) for the fire.
- Fire Building: Teach them to layer small kindling in the centre, with larger pieces surrounding it, creating a tepee shape.
- Firepits: Allocate Beavers to firepits.
2. Preparing campfire
- Finding wood: Beavers should find wood.
- Fire Building: Beavers to build fires (but not light at this stage).
Lighting fires (5 minutes)

1. Light fires: an adult lights the fires and Beavers watch.
Looking for insects (10 minutes)

1. Briefing:
- Looking for insects: we are looking for and naming five different types of insects for our Outdoors Challenge Award
- Where to find insects: e.g. under logs, in undergrowth.
2. Look for insects:
- Staying away from fires
- With help from adult to name them
3. Report back
Campfire cooking (15 minutes)
--------------------------------------
1. Briefing:
- Fire safety rules, including maintaining a safe distance from the flames, and sitting or kneeling when close to the fire.
- Cooking safety rules: Make sure there is space for everyone and if necessary take turns near the fire. They should kneel on one knee while holding skewers over the flames to avoid falling on the fire.
2. Demonstration: Show how to safely roast marshmallows and remind them to wait until the marshmallows cool before eating.
3. Cooking Time: Beavers go to their firepits, and when the fires have died down sufficiently, they roast their marshmallows, always under close adult supervision.
4. S’mores Preparation: Help Beavers create s’mores by placing marshmallows between two biscuits, ensuring they wait to eat until cooled.
5. Clean-up: Supervise Beavers in dousing the fire with water. Adults to dispose of waste properly.
