Instructions
Prepare a number of bags with ingredients to make meals. (Some simple meal ideas include: chicken curry and rice, pasta bolognese, chicken or vegetable fajitas, and spaghetti and meatballs.) Tailor the meals to fit in with your Guides’ dietary requirements.
Put all the ingredients into bags labelled with a letter or number.
Divide the Unit into groups or Patrols. A bag is needed for each group.
Prepare the Store cupboard box with spices, salt and pepper, oil, and whatever else you would like to put in.
Prepare the extra equipment box, extra chopping boards, different knives, colander, garlic press, slotted spoon, etc.
Each group rolls dice: highest roll gets first pick of the ingredient bags, next highest second pick, etc., until each group has a bag.
Each group also receives a set of cards. The group who got the lowest score in the dice challenge now gets to use two of their cards first. (Using the cards at all is optional.) Only one item can be removed from any group — if another group takes an item from a particular group the others cannot take from that group. The swap one ingredient card cannot be used to swap the main element of the dish, only secondary ingredients.
Give each group (Patrol) a rule sheet.
This format can be used as a competition.
Bags should be sealed and labelled before anyone arrives.
Each group is given a basic equipment box and the ingredients bag they choose.
Each group is given the same amount of time to complete their meal.
Judges mark on various areas including: division of tasks, food safety, cooking safety, taste, cleanup, and ensuring Leave No Trace is adhered to.
Rules for Cookout
Each group rolls the dice and the highest score gets to pick a bag of ingredients first, and next highest score gets second pick, until all bags are allocated.
Each group gets a set of cards. You can only use two of these cards, so think about it carefully — allow for a group (Patrol) discussion. You have the option not to use any cards or use only one card.
Each group has a notebook and pen. Allow five minutes to plan what you are cooking and what cards you plan to use.
You must use the two cards you are playing before any cooking commences. Once cooking time starts, cards can no longer be redeemed.
Each group member must complete a task to assist with the meal preparation.
Each group must do their own wash up and pack away of equipment.
Think safety first!
