Description

A beautiful Hindu festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, or close friends. Central to the festival is a sister tying a protective, decorative bracelet called a Rakhi around her brother's wrist.

Raksha Bandhan, often simply called Rakhi, is a joyful Hindu festival celebrated every August during the full moon that honors the lifelong bond between brothers and sisters. The name literally translates to "the bond of protection," which perfectly describes the central ritual where a sister ties a decorative sacred thread around her brother's wrist while praying for his health and happiness. In return, the brother offers a gift and pledges his lifelong love and support, concluding the ceremony with traditional sweets. While historically rooted in a brother’s promise to protect his sister, modern celebrations have evolved beautifully into a broader, mutual expression of care and respect, with cousins, friends, and even sisters tying threads for one another to celebrate their shared connection.
