Railway station and crossing game
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Staying safe at the railway.
Interactive role play activity to be done after hazards worksheet.
Covers standing behind yellow line, please mind the gap, not running for trains, not walking on tracks and what to do at a railway crossing
Resources
'Platform' - drawn area or PE mats to delineate platform; yellow line marked with chalk or ribbon
Railway crossing sign
Not essential - green and yellow flags(can say stop and go), whistle, station master/guard hat, train driver hat, flashing head torch
Instructions
Some children (eg 3 to start) form a train and move forward in 'conga line' together with the train driver making noise of the train and whistle.
Other children wait on the platform.
If the Station master/Guard waves a red flag the train stops at the station and other passengers can join the train at the back. Guard can also call out 'Express train coming through' and wave a green flag for the train to go through the station.
Play out different scenarios including waiting for a train, being late for a train, a wide gap between the train and the platform, dropping something on the railway tracks (and NOT going to get it)
Later add a railway crossing with a sign and the person holding it making beeping noise (+/-) flashing headtorch
- depending on green flags the crossing person will start beeping and lower their arm to close the path across the railway. Children take turns to cross and be the train or crossing. Walk calmly
Need to teach not to rush across if lights are flashing but train not yet insight and barrier not yet down.
