Water Carrier Challenge, Heatwave edition

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Aim: To understand that water is valuable, especially during hot weather or a hosepipe ban, and that everyone can help save it.

Time; 10–15 minutes

Resources

Equipment
2–4 buckets
Plastic cups or small containers
Water (or blue pom-poms/beanbags if indoors)
Cones or obstacles
Empty watering cans (optional)
Pictures of flowers, vegetables, birds or trees at the finish line

Instructions

Set-up

Place a bucket of water (or blue beanbags) at one end of the room.

At the opposite end place:

a watering can,
a bucket labelled "Community Garden", or
pictures of thirsty plants and wildlife.

Create a simple obstacle course using cones, tunnels or markers.

Instructions

Explain:

"We've had lots of hot weather and not much rain. The flowers, trees and birds need our help, but we also need to be careful not to waste water."

Each Squirrel:

Fills their cup (or picks up one blue beanbag).
Carefully walks through the obstacle course.
Pours the water into the watering can/bucket.
Runs back and tags the next person.

Continue until everyone's had several turns.

Challenge Round

Introduce a new rule:

"Oh no! There's a hosepipe ban. We can only carry a little water at a time."

Ask:

Was it quicker or slower?
Did we spill any?
Why is every little bit important?
Reflection

Questions:

Why shouldn't we waste water?
Who needs water during hot weather?
Can you think of ways to save water at home?

Possible answers:

Turn taps off.
Use a watering can.
Collect rainwater.
Only use what we need.
