Description

Scouts celebrate National Cheese on Toast Day by lighting and managing small fires on altar fires, then using frying pans to make their own cheese toasties.

The activity gives Scouts practical experience of fire lighting, maintaining a suitable cooking fire, food preparation and outdoor cooking. Once everyone has eaten, Scouts extinguish and clear their fires safely and wash up their cooking equipment.

Resources

Fire lighting: altar fires, kindling, firewood, matches/fire steels, buckets of water, heatproof gloves and fire extinguishing equipment.

Cooking: frying pans, spatulas, chopping boards, knives, plates, bread, cheese, butter/spread and a selection of optional fillings.

Cleaning: washing-up bowls, hot water, washing-up liquid, cloths/sponges, tea towels, rubbish bags and food-waste container.

Check dietary requirements and allergies beforehand and provide suitable alternatives where required.

Instructions

Divide Scouts into small groups around the altar fires. Brief them on fire safety, including safe positioning around the fire, handling fuel and what to do if there is a problem.

Scouts prepare their altar fire and collect suitable tinder, kindling and fuel. They light their fire and develop it until they have a small, controlled fire suitable for cooking.

While the fire settles, Scouts prepare their toasties. Butter the outside of two slices of bread, add cheese and any chosen fillings, then cook in a frying pan over the fire. Turn carefully and cook until both sides are toasted and the cheese has melted.

Scouts eat their toasties, then safely extinguish the fires and leave the fire area tidy.

Finish with everyone washing, drying and putting away their cooking equipment.

Leader notes: Keep fires small and manageable. Frying-pan handles should be positioned so they cannot easily be knocked. Consider allocating separate utensils/equipment for allergy or dietary requirements to avoid cross-contamination.
