Description
The girls learned the basics of first aid, including how to carry out a primary assessment (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR if needed). They discussed and practised how to recognise and treat common injuries and illnesses such as hyperthermia, hypothermia, shock, bleeding, burns, stings, asthma, cuts and abrasions, sprains, and suspected fractures through simple scenarios and demonstrations.

1. Introduction – Primary Assessment (5 minutes)
Explain the DRSABCD steps:
* D – Danger
* R – Response
* S – Send for help
* A – Airway
* B – Breathing
* C – CPR
* D – Defibrillator (AED)
Have each girl practise saying the steps aloud and explain why they come first in every emergency.
---
2. First Aid Matching Game (10 minutes)
Read a situation. The girls explain what they would do.
Examples:
* Friend has a nosebleed.
* Someone touches a hot pan.
* A Guide twists her ankle.
* Someone is shivering after getting soaked in cold rain.
* A person is dizzy and pale after an accident.
* Someone is stung by a bee.
* A Guide is having an asthma attack.
* Someone falls and cuts their knee.
Discuss the correct treatment after each answer.
---
3. Practical Skills (10 minutes)
Each girl practises:
* Applying pressure to a bleeding wound.
* Making a simple arm sling.
* Bandaging a sprained ankle.
* Cooling a pretend burn.
* Helping someone use an asthma reliever (demonstration only).
* Placing someone in the recovery position (if appropriate).
---
4. Review Challenge (5 minutes)
Ask quick questions:
* What does DRSABCD stand for?
* How long should you cool a burn?
* What should you do for heavy bleeding?
* What are signs of shock?
* How do you help someone with hypothermia?
* What should you do if you think someone has a broken bone?
Each girl shares one new thing she learned and one first aid skill she feels confident using.
Key First Aid Points
* Hyperthermia: Move to a cool place, loosen clothing, give cool water if conscious, cool the body, seek medical help if severe.
* Hypothermia: Move to a warm, dry place, remove wet clothing, warm slowly with blankets, give warm drinks if alert.
* Shock: Lay the person down, keep them warm, reassure them, call for help.
* Bleeding: Apply direct pressure, elevate if appropriate, bandage firmly.
* Burns: Cool under cool running water for 20 minutes, cover with a clean, non-stick dressing.
* Stings: Remove the sting if present by scraping it off, apply a cold pack, watch for allergic reactions.
* Asthma: Help the person use their reliever inhaler and follow their asthma action plan if they have one.
* Cuts and Abrasions: Clean the wound, apply antiseptic if available, cover with a dressing.
* Sprains: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (RICE).
* Breaks (Fractures): Keep the injured area still, support it with a sling or splint if trained, and seek medical assistance.
