Description

Young people will explore the challenges some people in their local community face during the Christmas period and discover how the Delivering Joy campaign helps individuals who may otherwise go without a gift. They will identify a community need and discuss how they can make a positive difference through collective action. Dunelm works with local schools, care homes, charities and refuges to gather gift requests from people who need support.

Instructions

1. Gather the group and explain that Christmas is a happy time for many people, but not everyone has the same experiences.
2. Ask young people what challenges people in the community may experience during the festive season.
3. Discuss topics such as loneliness, financial hardship, illness, homelessness, caring responsibilities and family difficulties.
4. Introduce Dunelm's Delivering Joy campaign and explain how local organisations submit gift requests for people who may otherwise not receive a Christmas present.
5. Show examples of gift tags and discuss who the recipients might be.
6. Ask the group to identify the need being met by the campaign.
7. Using sticky notes, ask everyone to write down one reason community support is important.
8. Share responses and create a collective list of positive impacts.
9. Finish by discussing how Scouts can contribute to their local community.
