Description

Try to outsmart a maze that you can’t even see! Every move could bring you closer to the finish or straight into a hidden dead end, so you’ll need a great memory and a little bit of courage to discover the secret route first.

Instructions

Place the blank grid on a table and sit the children around it. For larger groups you might want to split the group into two or three smaller groups, each with their own grid. A leader will need a copy of the solution sheet, that they keep hidden from the children. Give each child a counter or small game piece.
Explain to the group that this challenge will require them to try and get their playing piece from the start box to the other side of the grid. However there is an invisible maze that they need to try and navigate, remembering the route as they go.
The first child to play should place their counter on the start square. If it is safe, they may move their counter one square at a time in any direction allowed by the maze (for example, forwards, left or right. Diagonal movements are not allowed.).
After each move, the leader checks their hidden solution: If the move is correct, the player may continue. If the move is wrong, the leader declares they have hit a wall. The counter is then removed from the board and that player’s turn immediately ends.
The next child to go now starts their turn from the start square, trying to remember the safe route discovered by previous players before choosing where to move next.
Continue taking turns, with each player building on what the group has already learned, gradually revealing the correct path through the maze.
The first player to successfully reach the finish square is the winner.

To encourage teamwork, you could allow the group to work as one team, helping each other to remember the route. To make it more difficult, you could instruct the group that they are not allowed to help each other or give hints.
