Description

The Cubs make braided string friendship bracelets in the Kumihomo style. Compass points are used to explain how to complete the braid and the finished product is a miniature rope.

In Japan Kumihomo braids were used to hold Samurai armour together, as decorative wraps for sword handles, to adorn Buddhist temples and as cord to secure sashes on kimonos.
There are many different patterns of braiding Kumihomo, some very complex requiring 400 steps to achieve!

These simple braids will make bracelets the Cubs can swap, give to their friends or keep. The colours can be combined in different ways to give different effects, represent their Six or a favourite sports team. Once they get started the possibilities are endless.

Resources

Cardboard (cut in advance for younger sections)
Something round with diameter 10-15cm to draw round
Pen
Scissors
Yarn (embroidery thread works best)
Printed instructions

Instructions

Full Illustrated instructions are attached.
For younger sections prepare the cardboard circles in advance and start at Step 9.
Each piece of yarn should be roughly 3 times the length required. (Wrap the yarn 3x round the wrist and cut the others to match)
