Instructions
Side-Mount Self Rescue
- Stay calm and secure your board: Pull gently on your leash to bring the board back to you if it drifted away, and keep hold of your paddle.
- Position yourself at the center: Move to the side of the board near the middle carry handle. Make sure your legs and feet are floating out behind you at the surface, not trapped underneath the board.
- Kick and push up: Grab the center handle with one hand and hold your paddle in the other (or place the paddle blade through the handle loop to use as a stabilizing lever).
- Kick your legs hard while pushing up with your arms—much like climbing out of a swimming pool—to slide your chest and stomach onto the deck.
- Wriggle and recover: Once your torso is resting across the board, swivel your hips and bring your legs up onto the deck. Stay low on your stomach or knees to catch your breath before standing back up.

Peer T Rescue
- Check if swimmer is OK, ask them to keep hold of their board and try to self rescue.
- If they need extra help, paddle to them and position their board in the centre of your board (like a T shape).
- Pull front of their board onto yours and kneel on it to keep it steady.
- Grab and secure their paddle.
- Get swimmer to come to the side of the T and use their hands and arms on both boards to lever themselves up.
- Once they are on the board tell them to stay low on their stomach or knees to catch their breath before standing back up.

Unconscious Peer Rescue
- Secure and Call for Help: Reach the person: Paddle quickly to the unconscious person. Remove their leash if it is tangled or attached to a lost board. Drop or stash your paddle safely so it does not float away. Call for emergency help: Shout to anyone nearby to call emergency services (dial 999 or 112).
- Invert the Board: Flip your board: Turn your SUP (or the casualty's board if it is closer and stable) completely upside down. An upside-down board is easier to load an unresponsive body onto.
- Position the body: Move the person so the edge (rail) of the upside-down board fits snugly into their armpits.
- Leverage and Roll: Grab their hands: Reach across the bottom of the board and hold both of the person's wrists or hands securely. Use your weight: Kneel on the upside-down board and lean your body backward. Use your weight as leverage to roll the board back over into its normal, upright position with the person resting on top.
- Transport and CPR Center the casualty: Make sure the person is lying safely on their belly or back on the center of the board with their airway clear of the water. Head for shore: Kneel on the board and hand-paddle or use your paddle to get to land as fast as possible. Check breathing: Once on land or stable ground, check if they are breathing. If they are not breathing, start rescue breaths and chest compressions (CPR) immediately.
