Description
This activity is created for Scouts visiting Hertfordshire Scouts Air Activities for an air experience flight
Aims:
To familiarise students to the legs in a circuit
To familiarise students to aviation radio telephony
Objectives:
Learn the theoretical principles of the circuit pattern
Learn the theoretical principles of radio telephony
Simulate a circuit pattern on a large scale outdoor activity
Resources
Runway markers
Call signs
Handheld radios
Instructions
[In a classroom based setting]
Teach the legs of the circuit and what is involved in each leg.
Move on to the use of a radio, what is said and when it is said in the circuit.
Assign each student a call sign.
[Outside]
Mark out a shape of a runway using suitable materials ensuring enough room is provided for a suitable downwind leg.
The instructor demonstrates the circuit by starting on the taxiway, requesting permission to takeoff, reporting downwind and reporting final on the radio (blind calls). Once the circuit has been completed, the instructor will take the place of the air traffic controller and invite a student to join them. The instructor will assist the student as minimally as possible to ensure the young person gets the best experience from the activity while ensuring the circuit is working as intended.
The students walk around the circuit as demonstrated by the instructor completing full stop, touch and gos and upwind legs as they wish. Once they start to show proficiency, the instructor may vary the speeds of students, introduce IFR conditions (Close eyes/ rely on only ATC), departure/ arrival procedures (to be used when changing student acting as ATC)
The instructor can be satisfied that the knowledge has been taken in when the notebook runs smoothly as intended and a consolidating debrief has been issued. Skills can be further developed while doing the same thing on a flight simulator or observing the pilot while on an air experience flight.
