Description

Create battleships using junk and cardboard, then play a giant game of battleships.

Junk modelling equipment
tarp
paper grids
masking tape to create grids on the floor

Instructions

First use masking tape or chalk to create two 10x10 grids, with each gridsquare 20cm / 20cm (total grid is 2m x 2m). These are labelled A-J horizontally and 1-10 vertically.
Divide into 2 teams.
Each team uses junk modelling materials to create ships as follows:
1 aircraft carrier dimensions 1m x 20cm (to take up 5 squares on the grid)
1 battleship 80cm x 20cm (4 grid squares)
1 cruiser 60cm x 15cm (3 grid squares)
2 destroyers 40cm 15cm (2 grid squares)
2 submarines 20cm x 15cm (1 grid square)

The tarp is then put up in between the two grids so the teams can't see one another's grids. They place their ships on their own grids, lying horizontally or vertically in the grid squares, not diagonally.

Each team is given a grid sheet to record their attempts at hitting the opponent's ships.

Teams take it in turns to call out a coordinate e.g. "H4", the other team marks this on the grid with chalk or a cone, and calls out "hit" if they hit part of a ship and "miss" if they didn't. The team that called, records this on their paper grid. If the hit was the last remaining square of a ship, they announce e.g. "you sunk my cruiser".

The winner is the last one with ships not sunk.
