Description

A visit from the local Mountain Rescue team, who talk to young people about what they do, show some of their equipment, and help everyone understand who to call and when in an outdoor emergency.

Resources

- Space for the visiting team to set up (indoor hall or outdoor area, depending on what they bring)
- Chairs or floor space for young people to sit and listen
- Any equipment the visiting team plans to bring (confirm in advance)
- Torches or portable lighting, if any part of the visit happens outside after dark

Instructions

1. Before the session, confirm with the Mountain Rescue team what they plan to bring, cover, and how long they need — and let them know the age group so they can pitch the visit appropriately.
2. Welcome the visiting team and introduce them to the group.
3. Let the team talk about what Mountain Rescue does, how it's run by volunteers, and the kind of situations they help with.
4. If they've brought equipment, let young people look at — and where appropriate, hold or try on — items like a stretcher, rope, or radio, under close supervision.
5. Open up for questions from the group, and encourage everyone to ask what they're curious about.
6. Reinforce the safety message: if you're out on the hills or moors and someone's in trouble, the way to get help is the same as always — call 999 and ask for the police, who will call out Mountain Rescue.
7. Ask the group to explain back, in their own words, why getting help quickly matters — using something they heard from the team today.
8. Thank the team, and get a group photo if possible.
9. Close by asking each young person: what's one thing you learned about Mountain Rescue today?

**Make it easier:** Keep the visit shorter and more show-and-tell — focus on seeing and touching a couple of pieces of kit and a simple "who helps us" message, rather than a longer talk or Q&A.

**Make it harder:** Encourage young people to prepare a few questions in advance, and ask the team to talk a little more about how they navigate, communicate, and work as a team on a real callout.
