Ingredients
Apple filling: 5–6 medium apples,
50g caster sugar,
1 tsp cinnamon ,
2 tbsp water
Crumble topping:
150g plain flour,
100g butter,
75g caster sugar,
50g rolled oats (optional, but adds a nice texture)

Preheat the oven to 190°C / 170°C fan / Gas Mark 5.
Prepare the apples: Peel, core and chop the apples into small chunks.
Cook the apples: Put the apples into a saucepan with the sugar, cinnamon and water. Cook for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.
Make the crumble: Put the flour and sugar into a large bowl. Add the butter and rub it together with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the oats if using.
Assemble: Put the softened apples into a baking dish and spread the crumble mixture evenly over the top.
Bake: Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
Serve: Leave to cool for a few minutes, then serve with custard, cream or vanilla ice cream. ?
