Description

Introduce the Beavers to the Community Impact Stage 1 badge and get them thinking about things in their local community that they could help improve.

Resources

Large sheet of paper / flipchart paper
Marker pens
Blu Tack or tape if displaying the ideas

Instructions

Start by asking:
“What do you think our community is?”
Encourage answers such as our street, school, Beaver Colony, neighbourhood, local shops, parks and people who live nearby.

Explain:
“Your Community Impact badge is about finding something in our community that could be better and actually doing something to improve it. We’re going to work on that together this term.”

On a large sheet of paper write:
WHAT COULD WE MAKE BETTER?
Ask the Beavers for ideas about things they have noticed locally.
Prompts can include:
Is there anything that feels unsafe?
What is it like walking around our local area?
What about cycling or scooting?
Are there busy roads?
Are there places that are difficult to cross?
Can drivers always see children?
Is there anything that could make journeys safer for children?
Write down all their ideas without worrying at this stage about whether every suggestion is achievable.

Then introduce the possible theme:
“One thing we could investigate is whether children can walk, cycle and scoot safely around our community. We could become Community Detectives and find out what is already good and what could be safer.”

Ask:
“What could Beavers do to help make journeys safer?”
Record their suggestions. These might include posters, signs, telling other people about road safety, wearing brighter clothing, maps, safer crossing points or messages for drivers.

Finish by explaining:
“Next time we’re going to become Community Detectives. We’ll find out what makes a journey safe or unsafe, and then you will help decide what our Beaver Colony can do to make a difference. At the end of the term we’ll look back and see what we changed.”

End with:
“Put your hand up if you think Beavers can make a difference in our community.”

Leader notes:
Keep the discussion short and energetic. The purpose is to introduce the idea and gather the Beavers’ own thoughts rather than decide the whole project for them.
Keep or photograph the completed ideas sheet as evidence that the Beavers helped identify the community need and contributed ideas for the project.
This activity is planning and discussion, so it should not be counted towards the four hours of Community Impact action.
