Aim
A simple team activity that develops observation, communication and respect for the natural environment.

Before starting
Check the search area for hazards and set clear boundaries. Split Cubs into small teams with an adult or young leader where appropriate. Give each team one handout, a pencil and a reusable bag.

Safety rules
Cubs should collect only small, loose items already on the ground. They must not climb trees, enter water, cross roads or leave the agreed area. Do not collect mushrooms, berries, animal droppings, nests, eggs, bones, glass, sharp metal, needles, litter, or anything living. Ask an adult if an item looks unsafe.

Protecting the park
Do not pull leaves, bark, moss or flowers from living plants or trees. Avoid disturbing animals and habitats. Keep quantities small and return natural items to a suitable place at the end.

How to run it
Set a clear finishing time and meeting point. Teams tick each item only when it is safely inside their bag. Encourage teamwork rather than speed. An adult should check unusual items before they are handled.

Suggested scoring
Award 1 point for each safe item. Add 2 points for completing the bonus challenge. You can also recognise best teamwork, careful observation and respect for nature.

At the finish
Count and review the finds together. Discuss which items were easiest or hardest to find. Make the bonus picture if time allows, then return natural materials and take all bags, pencils and litter away.

Accessibility and inclusion
Pair Cubs thoughtfully, read the list aloud if useful and describe the search boundaries clearly. Allow extra time and offer a tactile or supported search for anyone who needs it. Focus recognition on participation and teamwork, not only the highest score.
