Instructions

How to Carve a Turnip Lantern
Cut the Base and Lid: Slice the bottom to make it flat, then cut off the top lid.
Hollow It Out: Use a sturdy metal spoon or a small chisel to scrape out the hard flesh until the walls are thin.
Carve a Face: Use a small, sharp knife to cut simple, angular shapes like triangles for eyes and a mouth.
Add a Light: Place a small tealight candle inside the hollow center and put the lid back on

Because turnips are incredibly dense and much harder to cut than pumpkins, you need sturdy, precise tools. Using standard plastic pumpkin-carving kits from the supermarket will likely bend or break them.
Essential Carving Tools
Chef's Knife: Best for slicing off the top lid and cutting a flat base so the turnip stands steadily.Paring Knife: A small, sharp, rigid knife offers the best control for cutting out detailed facial features.
Melon Baller or Metal Spoon: Ideal for scraping out the core. A melon baller with a serrated edge works best to bite into the tough flesh.
Apple Corer: Great for quickly plunging into the center to remove the bulk of the interior before scraping.
Wood Carving Chisels: Small gouges or V-tools are perfect for shaving away the outer skin if you want to create etched designs without cutting all the way through.
Safety Tips & Tricks
Soften it first: If the turnip is too hard, parboil it in boiling water for 3 to 5 minutes, or microwave it for 30 seconds to a minute. Let it cool completely before cutting. This softens the flesh significantly without cooking it through.
Watch your fingers: Always cut away from your body. Because turnips are small and round, they can easily slip.
