Description

Cubs explore four different habitats (sea, forest, desert and garden) and learn which animals and creatures live in each one. Working in teams, they create a large habitat background before choosing, drawing, cutting out and adding the correct creatures to their scene.

Resources

• 4 large sheets of paper or card (Preferably A3 or bigger)
• Coloured pencils, crayons or felt-tip pens
• Plain paper for drawing creatures
• Scissors
• Glue sticks or sticky tape
• A prepared list of mixed creatures from all four habitats
• Optional: printed pictures of the creatures to help Cubs draw them, examples or pictures of the four habitats

Instructions

Step 1: Create the habitat
Split the Cubs into four groups. Give each group one habitat: Sea, Forest, Desert, Garden
Each group draws and colours a large background showing their habitat. Encourage them to think about what their habitat looks like and what they might find there.

Step 2: Introduce the creatures
Give each group the same mixed list of creatures. Include animals from all four habitats.
Example list; Dolphin, Fox, Camel, Hedgehog, Octopus, Owl, Scorpion, Frog, Shark, Deer, Lizard, Ladybird, Crab, Squirrel, Snake, Bee, Seal, Badger, Meerkat, Butterfly
Cubs decide which creatures belong in their habitat. They should be encouraged to explain why they think each creature belongs there.

Step 3: Final Scene
Cubs choose creatures from their habitat, draw and colour them, carefully cut them out and stick them onto their group's background.
Encourage Cubs to think about where each creature would actually be found. For example, a fish should be in the water, while a fox might be hiding amongst the trees.

Step 4: Show and tell
Display all four habitats together. Ask each group to explain: Which creatures live in their habitat?
Why do they live there? What does each creature need from its habitat? Were there any creatures they weren't sure about?
