Instructions

Widening River

Aim: Pass a tennis ball across an increasingly wide river without anyone falling in.

Set-up

1. Lay the ropes parallel, about 1.5 m apart, forming the river banks.
2. Split each patrol roughly in half, with Scouts on opposite banks.
3. Give each patrol a tennis ball.

Rules

1. Pass the tennis ball from one Scout to another, across the river.
2. The ball must be physically passed. It must not be thrown, rolled, bounced, kicked or dropped for another Scout to collect.
3. Scouts must remain on their own bank.
4. Scouts may support each other to reach further into the river.
5. No jumping, stepping into the river, or climbing onto another Scout’s head, neck or shoulders.
6. All supporting/lifting must remain controlled and safe.
7. Successful pass: widen the river by 30 cm and repeat.
8. Ball dropped: retrieve it and repeat at the same width.
9. Scout falls into the river: that patrol is eliminated.
10. Touching the ground between the ropes counts as falling in.

Winning: Continue until one patrol remains.

Optional: Allow patrols to physically support Scouts from other patrols. The ball must still be passed by the competing patrol.

Safety: Ropes should lie loose on the ground, not be tensioned. Leaders can stop any attempt they consider unsafe
