Description

Grown in the UK or Not
It is good to think about where our food comes from and the people who make it. Buying food produced locally often means it is fresher, better for the environment, and supports jobs for local people.

Getting into the activity
Explain to the group that British Food Fortnight is taking place between 26th September to 11th October and celebrates foods grown and produced in the UK and those that grow and produce them.

Britian is famous all over the world for it’s different types of food and produce, but do your group know which foods are produced in the UK or not?
Split the children into teams at one end of your meeting space behind a cone with the ‘Grown In The UK’ and ‘Not Grown In The UK’ signs in front of them. Place the food cards at the other end of the space.
The children should take it in turns to run and grab a food card and bring it back to their team. You could obstacles or challenges into this too, if you wish.
The teams should discuss the food on the cards and then place them under either the ‘Grown in the UK’ or ‘Not Grown in the UK’ signs. Once they have done this for the first food card, the next person in the team can go and get another card.
Once the groups have sorted their cards, run through the answers below with them to see how many they got correct
Grown In The UK: Apples, Strawberries, Potatoes, Carrots, Onions, Wheat, Tea Leaves, Apricots, Chillies, Saffron.
Not Grown In The UK: Bananas, Pineapples, Coconuts, Mangoes, Oranges, Lemons, Coffee Beans, Cocoa Beans, Rice, Vanila, Peanuts, Sugar Cane.
