Description
In sixes, talk with Cubs about importance of a balanced diet and ask what they already know about different food groups.
Lay out on table a selection of various groceries and food items and have the Cubs sort them into food groups, along the way discussing how some items may fall into multiple groups ie. sweet potato is a vegetable and a carbohydrate.
Discuss how a balanced diet requires different quantities of each food group, shown as a pie chart on a plate (print out).
Introduce the concept that the best way to improve diet is to try to add more fruit and vegetables (especially vegetables) to meals they already enjoy, and the idea that pulses and legumes and vegetarian items such as tofu can replace meat occasionally. Talk about eating '5 a day' and also the newer idea of '30 plants a week'.
Mention the benefit on cutting down on ultra-processed foods and explain the difference between whole foods, processed foods and ultra-processed foods.
Resources
