Irish animal habitats -Who lives here?

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Brownies match pictures of Irish plants and animals to the habitats where they might be found. Some may fit in more than one habitat, so there isn’t always one right answer. Finish by heading outside for a short habitat hunt around your meeting place.

Pencils and paper

Instructions

1.Print and cut out the habitat cards and picture cards.

2.Put out the six habitat cards: woodland, hedgerow, garden, river, bog and seashore.

3. Give the Brownies the picture cards and ask them to decide where each belongs. They can work in Sixes or small groups.

4. Compare the answers. Did everyone put them in the same place? Could any of the plants or animals belong in more than one habitat?

5. Talk about what makes each habitat a good place for the plants and animals that live there.

6. Take the Brownies outside for five minutes. Ask them to find one small habitat — a hedge, tree, patch of grass, flower bed, wall or puddle — and look closely at what is living or growing there. Remind them to look without disturbing anything.

7. Before heading back inside, ask the Brownies, “what could we do to help protect the animals and plants that live here?”
TAlk about simple things they can do, such as not dropping litter, leaving plants and flowers growing, not disturbing nests or hiding places, and taking rubbish home.
