Description

Walk in someone's shoes (Walking Debate)

Resources

 Drama Role Cards (attached) – enough copies so each Guide has one role.
 Patrol Debrief Questions (attached)

Instructions

Introduction
The aim is not to reach the other side of the room but to experience the life of their character. Allow time for the Guides to reflect on the statement and then move or not. As the statements are read out, Guides begin to spread throughout the room, some taking steps and others hardly moving. By the end the Guides will be spread across the room, representing the inequality for people around our world.

Instructions
Refer to Mahlet’s story (Option 02) and how the girls feel their lives might differ or be similar. Distribute a role card to each Guide (attached), to read but not to show to others. Allow time for Guides to familiarise themselves with the role (think of who they are, where they live, their family, what kind of life they have and so on).
• Ask the Guides to stand in a row across the middle of the room.
• Explain that you are going to read out statements (see below). If the statement is true for their character, they take 1 step forward. If it is false, 1 step back, or it they don’t know, stay still.
Statements
1. I have enough food to eat and water to drink
2. I will probably go to college
3. I use electricity each day
4. If it does not rain, I am still able to get food
5. I am not affected in my daily life by changing weather patterns

Debrief/Discussion
• Ask the Guides questions in role. How do you feel? What are you thinking? Then take Guides out of their character-roles and ask them to discuss in patrols the attached questions 1-7.
• Some Guides may like to pick a character and later at home write a diary entry for them.
