Cubs Airplane beetle drive

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

A version of beetle drive to build an airplane out of cake and biscuits so that Cubs can learn to name the basic parts of a plane. (Air Activities task 2)

Resources

Paper plate - one per cub
Regal Angel Slices - one per cub (these are the longest cake slices we could find and they have pink and yellow "livery" too) alternative is Tunnocks Caramel Wafers
Rich Tea Fingers - two per cub
Wafer biscuit - one per cub (we used Crawfords Wafers as they are longer (& cheaper) than the pink ones and you can make the whole tail out of one biscuit)
Mini marshmallows - 4 per cub ( 2 mini marshmallows = one engine)

Maltesers - 2 per TEAM
Dice - 1 per TEAM
Cup of either buttercream of glace icing to act as glue - 1 per TEAM
Instruction sheet - 1 per TEAM

One sharp knife and a cutting board - for leaders!

Instructions

Cut about 3cm off each wafer and cut the small section into two triangles (the rectangle is the horizontal stabiliser and one triangle is the vertical stabiliser, one triangle is spare).

Cut ONE rounded end off each rich tea biscuit - the straight (cut) end is the end that will sit on the fuselage and the curved end will be the wing tip.

Give the instruction sheet and dice to each team and explain that they are building individual airplanes.

In order to help the cubs learn the plane parts we had leaders look after the parts and the cubs had to ask for the part by its proper name but you could just set them up on the table and let the cubs go for it under the sixers/seconders watchful eyes (if you have reliable sixers / seconders).
